Temporal Preference Optimization as Weighted Constraint Satisfaction

چکیده
We present a new efficient algorithm for obtaining utilitarian optimal solutions to Disjunctive Temporal Problems with Preferences (DTPPs). The previous state-of-the-art system achieves temporal preference optimization using a SAT formulation, with its creators attributing its performance to advances in SAT solving techniques. We depart from the SAT encoding and instead introduce the Valued DTP (VDTP). In contrast to the traditional semiring-based formalism that annotates legal tuples of a constraint with preferences, our framework instead assigns elementary costs to the constraints themselves. After proving that the VDTP can express the same set of utilitarian optimal solutions as the DTPP with piecewise-constant preference functions, we develop a method for achieving weighted constraint satisfaction within a meta-CSP search space that has traditionally been used to solve DTPs without preferences. This allows us to directly incorporate several powerful techniques developed in previous decision-based DTP literature. Finally, we present empirical results demonstrating that an implementation of our approach consistently outperforms the SAT-based solver by orders of

Optimizing Temporal Preferences
This paper focuses on problems where the objective is to maximize a set of local preferences for times at which events occur. Previous work by the authors and others has resulted in a formalization of a subclass of these problems into a generalization of Temporal Constraint Satisfaction Problems, using a semi-ring as the underlying structure for reasoning about preferences. A tractable strategy...
متن کاملWeighted Constraints in Fuzzy Optimization
Many practical optimization problems are characterized by some flexibility in the problem constraints, where this flexibility can be exploited for additional trade-off between improving the objective function and satisfying the constraints. Especially in decision making, this type of flexibility could lead to workable solutions, where the goals and the constraints specified by different parties...
متن کاملOpen constraint programming
Traditionally, constraint satisfaction problems (CSP) have assumed closed-world scenarios where all domains and constraints are fixed from the beginning. With the Internet, many of the traditional CSP applications in resource allocation, scheduling and planning pose themselves in open-world settings, where domains and constraints must be discovered from different sources in a network. To model ...
متن کاملSolving Weighted Argumentation Frameworks with Soft Constraints
We suggest soft constraints as a mean to parametrically represent and solve “weighted” Argumentation problems: different kinds of preference levels related to arguments, e.g. a score representing a “fuzziness”, a “cost” or a probability level of each argument, can be represented by choosing different semiring algebraic structures. The novel idea is to provide a common computational and quantita...
متن کاملConstraint-Based Preferential Optimization
We first show that the optimal and undominated outcomes of an unconstrained (and possibly cyclic) CP-net are the solutions of a set of hard constraints. We then propose a new algorithm for finding the optimal outcomes of a constrained CPnet which makes use of hard constraint solving. Unlike previous algorithms, this new algorithm works even with cyclic CP-nets. In addition, the algorithm is not...
